Study of the Settling Characteristics of Tailings Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Technique

چکیده
The oil sands mining and extraction processes in Canada produce large volumes of tailings that are a mixture of mainly water, clay, sand, chemicals and bitumen. This residue is deposited into tailings ponds where sand settles faster than fine clays which require many years to fully consolidate. Therefore, land reclamation and water recirculation become significant environmental impacts. The tailings settling rate depends on particle size, density and surface properties which can be modified by variations in the pH, salinity, and addition of flocculants and / or coagulants. Although plant scale developments have been made to improve tailings settling rates, there is a need for an on-site fast measurement of tailings settling characteristics to determine process modifications. This study uses the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique to analyze variations in tailings settling properties. The results show the NMR technique as a potential online application to estimate the lifetime of a pond and to monitor oil sands processing.

A proton NMR method for the drtermination of salvation numbers of alkaline earth cations with hexamethyl phosphoramide (HMPA) in nitromethane (NM) as diluents is described. The method is based on monitoring the resonance frequency of HMPA protons as a function of HMPA / metal ion molar ratio at constant metalion concentration. The average salvation number of cations, , at any HMPA / metal ...

In this work, we have studied binding of Clonidine drug (C9H9Cl2N3) with zigzag single walled carbonnanotubes (SWCNT) (5, 0) by theoretical methods of theory using Gaussian 09 software package.Binding energies, NMR parameters and HOMO- LUMO Gap energy were calculated. Results frombinding energies indicate that it is possible thermodynamically to bind Clonidine drug to SWCNT.The calculated NMR p...

Naphthoquinones are natural aromatic compounds that can be discovered in various plant families. In recent times a diversity of biological activities of these compounds has been reported. In most cases, these pharmacological activities are related to redox and acid-base properties, which can be modulated synthetically by modifying the substituents attached to the 1, 4- naphthoquinone ring, in o...
